WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team will make weight and take the mat for the first time in 2021-22 on Friday, however the Boilermakers will be competing against themselves as they host the preseason, intra-squad wrestle offs in Holloway Gymnasium at 7 p.m. ET. Head coach Tony Ersland has scheduled approximately 18 matches for the evening, ranging from most of the Boilermakers' seven returning NCAA qualifiers to some of the newest members of the team.
"Getting to wrestle offs means we're one step closer to actually being able to wrestle other teams," said Ersland. "It's about getting down to weight for the first time, getting that first warm-up in, working out all the wrinkles before we lay it on the line against a real opponent."
The Boilermakers return nine of 10 starters from a 2021 squad that went 4-5 in Big Ten duals, took sixth at the conference tournament and qualified seven individuals for the NCAA Championships. Six wrestlers earned preseason rankings from the various polls, including a No. 8 mark at 157 pounds for Kendall Coleman, a No. 12 ranking for Devin Schroder at 125 pounds and a No. 13 spot for Thomas Penola at 197 pounds.
Doors to Holloway Gymnasium will open at 6 p.m., and all seating is first come, first served. Fans are reminded that current Protect Purdue protocols require facial coverings for indoor settings, and this includes Purdue wrestling events.
