MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Purdue women's tennis team opened the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at Middle Tennessee State on Thursday with a stellar set of singles matches, winning six of its seven matches.
The singles haul all came in straight sets.
A pair of freshmen took a win in their first regional competition match. Tara Milic scored a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Anna Smith from Xavier. Carmen Gallardo Guevara topped Ellie Eades 6-2, 6-2.
Csilla Fodor cruises to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anja Trbeznik from Lipscomb. Nathalia Wolf Gasparin downed Jada Young from UT-Chattanooga 6-3, 6-4, and Seira Shimizu outlasted Jana Leder from Austin Peay in the opening frame to take a 7-6(4), 6-4 win.
Gallardo Guevara will face East Tennessee State's Mayya Gorbunova in the second round, Milic will go up against Elizabeth Pendergast from Cincinnati, Gasparin will take on Chelsea Sawyer from Louisville, Shimizu will see Kentucky's Maialen Morante, Galindo will play Aran Teixido-Garcia from Memphis and Fodor will cross with Lidia Gonzalez from Kentucky on Friday.
The Boilermakers will return to the courts Friday morning with doubles and singles matches scheduled.
