LAWRENCE, Kan. – Purdue swimmer Kate Beavon was victorious by nearly a full minute in the 5,000 meters at the CSCAA Open Water Nationals, leading the way as the Boilermakers' distance trio finished third as a group.

Beavon won with a time of 1:03:09.6, besting second place Illaria Muzilli of Nebraska (1:04:07.6) by 58 seconds. The 5,000-meter test of endurance and pacing is equivalent to swimming 3.1 miles. Traditionally, the longest indoor distances contested are 1,500 meters (long course) and 1,650 yards (short course).

Beavon, Evie Sierra (18th) and Abby Jahns (20th) all finished among the top 20 in a field of 70 swimmers. Purdue joined Nebraska and Rice as the only teams in attendance to have three swimmers place among the top 20.

Beavon is a junior from Johannesburg, South Africa. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree moved up the Purdue all-time leaderboards with career-best times in the 500- (4:48.61, 15th), 1000- (9:56.05) and 1650-yard freestyle (16:32.50, 10th) last season. Prior to becoming a Boilermaker, she was a six-time South African champion in the freestyle events and competed for her country at the 2017 FINA World Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Sierra (South Bend) and Jahns (Fishers) are sophomores that earned the opportunity to represent the program at the Big Ten Championships last season.

Purdue opens its season the weekend of Oct. 15 to 16. Friday's meet is a men's dual vs. Minnesota and a women's intrasquad. Saturday afternoon, the Boilermakers will welcome numerous schools from around the state to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center for the return of the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet.
