WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Six Purdue swimmers are slated to race this weekend on the grand stage of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which has been split into two Waves of competition due to the unique circumstances of this year.
Masy Folcik, Sylvia Kobylak and Hayley Pike qualified for the Purdue women. Ryan Hrosik, Coleman Modglin and Nick Sherman are slated to represent the Purdue men. Omaha, Nebraska, is serving as the host city for USA Swimming's Olympic Team Trials for the fourth straight time dating back to 2008.
Update: Alumnus Danny Tucker (2011-14) is also racing at the Olympic Trials on Monday in the 50 freestyle.
The full list of events and the daily schedule for the Boilermakers racing in Omaha are included at the bottom of this page. Results will also be posted here in the schedule area. Purdue's events are Saturday and Monday. The Olympic Channel is providing the live television coverage of the 8 p.m. ET finals sessions.
The CoVid-19 pandemic and postponement of the 2020 Olympics led to the two Waves of competition at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials this year. Purdue's six current swimmers qualified for the Wave 1 portion of the meet. Alumna and USA Swimming National Team member Kaersten Meitz (2015-18) will race in Wave 2 the week of June 13 to 20. The top finishers in Wave I also qualify for Wave II.
Meanwhile, women's volunteer assistant coach Evan Austin is also slated to race the weekend of June 17 to 19 at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials in Minneapolis. Austin is in great shape to qualify for the Paralympics again after he won gold in both the 50-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle at the Para Swimming World Series the weekend of April 15-17 in Texas.
AĆIN ON THE VERGE OF BECOMING FIRST BOILERMAKER TO QUALIFY FOR TOKYO
• Nikola Aćin, the Purdue All-American and program record holder in the 100-yard freestyle, is believed to have clinched an Olympic berth as part of Serbia's 4x100 free relay team. At the European Aquatics Championships last month in Budapest, Hungary, Aćin anchored Serbia's team to a spot in the final, where the quartet posted a time of 3:13.73. That mark ranks among the top 16 in the world and should qualify Serbia for the Olympic Games in the event. He posted a 100-meter split of 48.24 in the prelims to help Serbia qualify second of 21.
• Nikola Bjelajac and Aćin also raced individually in the 50- and 100-meter free in Budapest. The following weekend, they visited Bjelajac's hometown of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to race again in the freestyle sprints while pursuing individual Olympic qualifying times. Aćin (49.42) and Bjelajac (50.97) finished 1-2 in the A final of the 100 free at the Banja Luka Open on May 30.
• Olympian and All-American Jinq En Phee races at the Malaysia National Championships the weekend of June 11 to 13 in Kuala Lumpur, which will serve as Malaysia's Olympic Trials. Aćin and Phee both represented their countries at the 2019 FINA World Championships in South Korea.
