WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Brandon Loschiavo's NCAA title as part of a 1-2 finish for the Boilermakers in platform diving coupled with the record-setting success of the relay teams highlighted Purdue men's swimming & diving's memorable 2020-21 season.
Loschiavo and Ben Bramley both medaled on the tower at the NCAA Championships and Big Ten Championships. By finishing 1-2 on the national stage of NCAAs, Purdue became the first team to produce the top two finishers in any diving event since Auburn did likewise on the tower in 2005.
Season Recaps: 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020
Greg Duncan (5th in 1-meter diving) and Nikola Aćin (8th in 100 free) were also championship finalists and full-fledged All-Americans at NCAAs. Nine student-athletes qualified for the national championship meet and they combined to earn 14 All-America honors. The Boilermakers scored in seven of their 12 events, both totals representing program records, to finish in 17th place with 83 points. It marked the ninth time since 2005 that Purdue finished among the top 20 at the national championship meet.
Loschiavo became the fourth Purdue diver to win an NCAA title, joining David Boudia (6, 2009-11), Steele Johnson (5, 2015-18) and Casey Matthews (3-meter in 2013). The 1-2 finish by Loschiavo and Bramley helped Adam Soldati win his 10th career Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year honor, a total that ranks as the most among active coaches.
Aćin was also a big part of Purdue's relay success, which featured a silver medal at Big Tens, a pair of honorable mention All-America awards at NCAAs and four program records. Individually, Aćin won silver in the 100 freestyle and became the first Boilermaker to eclipse 42 seconds (41.81) in the event, besting Danny Tucker's program record (42.84) from 2013 by nearly a full second.
Nick Sherman set program records in the 200 free and 200 IM while also contributing to team records in all three freestyle relays. He swam the leadoff leg on both honorable mention All-America relay teams at NCAAs.
Trent Pellini was also part of three relay records and helped Purdue set a program benchmark in all five relays over the course of his career. He earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay this year. Excluding All-American honors from 2020 when student-athletes were recognized in the wake of the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, Pellini became Purdue's first male swimmer to be a multi-year All-American in an individual event since Lyam Dias (200 breast) in 2014 and 2015.
Ryan Lawrence and Ryan Hrosik were also honorable mention All-Americans as part of the freestyle relay teams. At Big Tens, they teamed with Aćin and Sherman to win silver in the 200 free relay. It was the program's first silver in a relay event at Big Tens since 2009.
Loschiavo became just the fourth men's diver since platform was added to the championship meet in 1988 to win three Big Ten titles in the event. It gave Purdue a Big Ten champion for the seventh consecutive season dating back to Dias in the 200 breast in 2015. Loschiavo also became only the third Purdue diver to qualify for NCAAs four times.
Bramley won bronze on the tower at Big Tens, medaling in the event for the third year in a row. He became just the fifth Purdue diver (men and women) to medal in three straight seasons.
Six Boilermakers – Brett Riley, Aćin, Bramley, Loschiavo, Pellini and Sherman – scored in all three of their individual events at Big Tens. Pellini accomplished the feat for the third time in his career and became Purdue's first swimmer since Guillermo Blanco in 2015 to be a three-time A finalist.
As a team, the Boilermakers finished in fourth place to match the program's top showing at Big Tens. Purdue has now finished fourth four times in the last seven seasons and six times since 2009. Previously, the program only did it twice from 1976 to 2008.
Highlighted by 10 career bests that were among the top five in program history, the Purdue swimmers produced 22 times at Big Tens that claimed spots among the team's top 15 all-time lists. Impressively, 15 different Boilermakers had at least one career best among that group of 22.
Purdue has also seen its team GPA continue to rise in recent semesters. The Boilermakers had a program-record 21 Academic All-Big Ten honorees this season. Their 3.31 team mark during the fall semester ranked fifth in the Big Ten and was up from 3.21 in the fall of 2019.
Purdue will bid adieu to a group of dedicated seniors that includes Duncan, Lawrence, Loschiavo and Pellini. Aćin, Bramley, Hrosik and Sherman headline the returnees for the 2021-22 campaign.
