WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fours were wild for Purdue men's swimming & diving at the Big Ten Championships this year as the 17 Boilermakers that scored in an individual event teamed up for a quartet of relay records and a fourth-place finish in the team scoring.
The Boilermakers won four medals this season, headlined by Brandon Loschiavo's third career Big Ten title in platform diving. Nikola Aćin doubled up his silver medals in the 100 freestyle and as part of Purdue's 200 free relay team. Ben Bramley medaled in platform diving for the third year in a row.
PURDUE'S 4TH PLACE FINISHES AT BIG TENS (SINCE 1976)
• 1988, 1997, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021
The four relay records, all via NCAA automatic qualifying times (A Cuts), headlined the six program benchmarks set by the Boilermakers. Purdue eclipsed four relay records at Big Tens for the first time since 2009, which was also the last year the program won silver in a relay (also 200 free).
Individually, Nick Sherman (1:33.81 in 200) and Aćin (42.27 in 100) eclipsed team records in the freestyle events. Sherman bested John Schmitt's 200 free mark that had stood since 2009 and Aćin took down a 100 free record by Purdue's last silver medalist in the event at Big Tens, Danny Tucker in 2013.
Senior Trent Pellini was once again Purdue's top scorer in the swimming events, accounting for a career-high 73 team points while being an A finalist in all three of his events. He scored in all three of his events for the third time in his career and became the first Purdue swimmer since Guillermo Blanco in 2015 to be a three-time A finalist. Pellini's 73 team points were also the most by a Purdue swimmer since the scoring breakdown changed beginning in 2016.
Pellini was one of six Boilermakers to score in all three of their individual events, joining Aćin, Bramley, Loschiavo, Sherman and Brett Riley. All six accomplished the feat for at least the second time in their careers.
Highlighted by 10 career bests that were among the top five in program history, the Purdue swimmers produced 22 times that claimed spots among the team's top 15 all-time lists. Impressively, 15 different Boilermakers had at least one career best among that group of 22.
