WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two members of the incoming Fall 2021 Purdue volleyball team: Ali Hornung and Sydney Yim were named Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year for Indiana and Massachusetts, respectively.
The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court for every state. All 50 honorees will be submitted for Gatorade National Player of the Year, which will be announced in June.
The duo make up 50 percent of the Fall 2021 incoming class. Purdue's No. 9 nationally ranked signing class also includes a pair of Under Armour High School All-Americans with Hornung's first team honor and Raven Colvin's honorable mention.
Hornung, who will be an outside hitter/defensive specialist for Purdue, was selected for Purdue's home state, hailing from New Albany, Indiana and is sister to current Boilermaker, Marissa Hornung. The Boilermaker amassed 446 kills and 368 digs to lead the Our Lady of Providence High School to a 23-7 record and a Class 4A semifinals. The three-time First Team All-State selection was also a VolleyballMag.com First Team All-American, a MaxPreps First Team All-American in addition to her Under Armour First Team All-America honor.
Yim, a product of Newburyport, Massachusetts, recorded 178 assists and 102 kills this past season, leading the Clippers (9-3) to the Cape Ann League Tournament semifinals. Yim also compiled 67 digs and 41 aces on the year. A 2019 Division II First Team All-State selection, she is a two-time CAL Player of the Year as well as a 2019 Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic recipient.
