Softball Comes Up Short in Ohio State Series Opener

Ryleigh Scott scored Purdue's lone run in the 5-1 loss to Ohio State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –  Five runs in the first two innings proved too large a deficit for the Boilermakers, falling 5-1 in the series opener versus Ohio State on Friday evening.

With the result, Purdue softball moves to 10-23 on the season while Ohio State (18-14) recorded the first win in West Lafayette since 2008.

Relief pitcher Ashley Peters allowed just one run through 5.1 innings of work, entering the game for Savanah Henley (3-7) in the second inning. With the Buckeyes sharp eye, the duo was unable to serve up a strikeout in the meeting.

Purdue recorded three hits on the day, including a pair of doubles by Rachel Becker and Kiley Goff and a single from Alex Echazarreta.

The Boilermakers loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, led-off with a double by Becker that touched the center field wall. The junior was followed by Kiley Goff and Kaitlyn Brannstrom, who stole second and walked to first, respectively, but the stringent Buckeye defense kept the Boilermakers from converting.

After Ohio State added four runs in the second inning, Purdue responded with its lone run of the day. Quick on her feet, Scott capitalized on the opportunity while at third when the shortstop overthrew the ball to first. The unearned run marked the eighth of the year for the senior.
