WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue wrestling will send a small group to the UWW Junior-Senior Freestyle National Championships this weekend, set for Saturday and Sunday at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. Boilermaker rookies Cooper Noehre and Macartney Parkinson will compete in the junior division, while senior Max Lyon and junior Parker Filius are set for the senior division.
All four Boilermakers will be competing for a spot on the U.S. world team for 2021, an achievement last met by a Purdue wrestler when Christian Brunner made the 2018 U23 World team for the United States and traveled to Romania.
Both Lyon and Filius earned spots on the podium in their last national freestyle competition as Lyon was the runner-up at 86 kg at the 2020 U23 Championships, while Filius finished fifth at 65 kg. They will compete at the same weights, respectively, Saturday in the senior division.
Noehre and Parkinson open competition Saturday in the junior division as Noehre is registered in the 74 kg bracket, while Parkinson is set for 86 kg. It will be the first freestyle tournament for the Boilermakers rookies since arriving in West Lafayette. The junior tournament is a two-day event, while the senior open will only be held Saturday.
