JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Jalil Brewer won the shot put and senior Brody Smith ran the fifth-fastest 1,500-meter time in program history to headline the opening day of the Big Ten North Florida Hawkeye Invitational for the Purdue track & field team in Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday.

Brewer earned his second shot put victory in as many weeks to begin the outdoor season. Friday's winning throw in the men's invitational event was 19.70 meters, which would rank No. 4 in the Purdue record books if he didn't already hold the third-best mark.

Smith finished the men's 1,500 invite in 3:46.95, which is No. 5 in school history. Competing in his first outdoor track meet since May, 2019, Smith ran the 1,500 for the first time as a Boilermaker and placed sixth overall in the event.

Four Boilermakers qualified for nine total spots in the finals of the men's 100-meter dash. In Friday's prelims, senior Samson Colebrooke finished second overall and first in his heat with a time of 10.50 seconds. Fellow senior Malcolm Dotson also was first in his heat and third overall in 10.52. Freshman Marcellus Moore was right behind Dotson in 10.56 to place fourth overall while also finishing first in his heat. Sophomore Justin Becker qualified for the finals by 0.03 seconds, as he was ninth overall in 10.62. All four were running the 100 for the first time this season, and Moore competed in the event for the first time collegiately.

Sophomore Camille Christopher qualified for women's 100-dash finals. She was first in her heat and fourth overall in 11.60 seconds, a season-best time.

Purdue notched a fourth- and fifth-place finish in the women's 400-meter invite. Freshman Cierra Williams was fourth in 56.21, just ahead of senior teammate Samara Miller, who was fifth in 56.29.

The first event of the day was the women's open hammer throw, where freshman Kaia Harris was fourth with a personal-best throw of 52.89 meters. Senior Jaden Mattox was fifth in the women's long jump invite, with a jump of 5.90 meters.

In the women's 400 hurdles invite, freshman K'Ja Talley notched a fifth-place finish in 1:01.10. Fellow freshman Anna Maria Leszczynska was sixth in 1:01.37. In the men's competition, freshman Jabari Bryant placed sixth in 54.01.
