WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's tennis team returned to the Schwartz Tennis Center to host No. 30 Northwestern on Friday. The Boilermakers dropped the contest to the Wildcats by a score of 4-0.
Northwestern started off strong in doubles play, taking matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Tomasz Dudek and Sebastian Welch were trailing 5-3 when there match was halted.
Northwestern kept the momentum in singles play, taking the matches at No. 2 and No. 3 in straight sets. Milledge Cossu took the first set at No. 4 against Trice Pickens, but lost the next two sets for final score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, which clinched the match for Northwestern.
After losing a close first set in a tiebreaker to No. 58 Dominik Stary, Mateo Julio bounced back to dominate the second set 6-3. Shortly thereafter, the senior's match was halted at a score of 7-6(2), 3-6.
Santiago Galan dominated the first set at No. 5 against Simen Bratholm, but Bratholm evened it up back up at one set apiece in the second. Galan had a 5-4 advantage in the third set when the match was ended.
Upon losing the first set at No. 6, Tomasz Dudek came back to dominate the second set to make it tied at one set each. The Poland native was chipping back from a 4-2 deficit in the third set when his match was terminated.
Purdue will look to bounce back on Sunday, when they host No. 9 Illinois. The first serve is scheduled for noon ET.
