WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's tennis team played the second half of a weekend home stand on Sunday, hosting No. 14 Michigan. The Boilermakers fell to the Wolverines 7-0.
In doubles play, Mateo Julio and Sebastian Welch took on Michigan's Mattias Siimar and Andrew Fenty, the No. 2 ranked doubles pairing in the nation. After tying it at 4-4, the Boilermaker duo didn't have enough to close it out, dropping the match at No. 1 6-4, which clinched the doubles point for Michigan. Michal Wozniak and Milledge Cossu were up 5-4 when their match at No. 2 was halted.
Due to Purdue injuries, the singles match at No. 6 was defaulted, and a point was given to Michigan to make it 2-0.
The Boilermakers faced two ranked singles players at No. 1 and No. 2. Sebastian Welch was dealt a tough test in his first match as No. 1, having to face No. 14 Andrew Fenty. The Purdue sophomore put up a fight, but lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Michal Wozniak fell in straight sets to No. 28 Ondrej Styler at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2.
Purdue will go on the road next weekend to face No. 7 Ohio State on Friday, then travel to Penn State on Sunday. Friday's match will start at 6 p.m., and Sunday's will start at 11 a.m.
