Ellis Makes Pentathlon Season Debut

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue track & field sophomore Jayla Ellis made her season debut in the pentathlon on Saturday at the Illini B1G Multi-Meet in Champaign, Illinois.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue track & field sophomore Jayla Ellis made her season debut in the pentathlon on Saturday at the Illini B1G Multi-Meet in Champaign, Illinois.
 
Appearing in her third meet in as many weeks to open the 2021 indoor season, Ellis placed 12th overall in the pentathlon with 3,142 points at the University of Illinois Armory. It was her fourth career pentathlon appearance.
 
Ellis' day began with the 60-meter hurdles, where she placed third with a time of 8.71 seconds. In a tightly-contested race, 0.04 seconds separated the second, third and fourth-place finishers.
 
In the high jump, Ellis was 13th with a mark of 1.52 meters. She then tied for sixth place in both the shot put and long jump, with a throw of 10.78 meters and a jump of 5.19 meters.
 
The meet concluded with the 800, where Ellis was 13th with a time of 3:03.45.
 
Ellis is joined in the pentathlon field by 15 other student-athletes from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
 
Up next, Ellis and the Boilermakers make their second trip to Bloomington, Indiana, for the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 6.
