WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team was ranked No. 18 in TrackWrestling's 2021 preseason poll on Monday, marking a third preseason ranking for the Boilermakers for the pending season. Seven individuals earned top-25 marks in the poll, earning a projected 29.0 tournament index points, led by senior Devin Schroder, who is tabbed No. 3 in the nation at 125 pounds.
A 2020 NWCA First Team All-America pick, Schroder marks the third straight season with at least one top-10 ranked Boilermaker in the preseason polls and is the highest ranked Boilermaker to start a season since Cashé Quiroga and Ivan Lopouchanski opened the 2011-12 season in the top-five at 133 and 149, respectively. Schroder went 26-5 in 2019-20, finishing second at the Big Ten Championships and earning the No. 5 seed at the NCAA Championships before their cancellation.
Sophomore Kendall Coleman also comes into 2021 ranked in the top five, earning the No. 5 ranking at 157 pounds after a First Team All-America season in 2019-20. Coleman had 29 wins in his rookie season, placing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Midlands Championships before a runner-up showing at the Big Ten Championships and a No. 6 overall seed at the NCAA Championships.
Three other Boilermakers were ranked in the top-20 of their respective weight classes as senior Griffin Parriott is 13th at 149, sophomore Thomas Penola is No. 17 at 197 and junior Parker Filius is No. 19 at 141. Senior Max Lyon is just outside the top-20 at 184 pounds, ranked No. 21, while redshirt freshman Emil Soehnlen is 22nd at 174 pounds, moving up at weight from the 2019-20 season.
This is the second straight season Purdue has had seven preseason ranked individuals, and the fourth straight year the team has had at least five.
