Purdue Men & Women host Michigan State

Friday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. / 16-Event Co-Ed Dual Meet
Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center / West Lafayette, Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue swimming & diving teams resume their dual meet schedules with their annual head-to-head action vs. Michigan State, the first of four Big Ten duals for the Boilermakers over the next four weekends.

The 16-event dual meet is set for 4 p.m. ET on Friday. Admission is free for all regular-season meets at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The Purdue men, women and divers have not all competed together at the same meet since the Nov. 8 dual at Tennessee.

Friday's dual is the Boilermakers' annual Be The Match meet. In memory of the late Tom Reiter, a longtime Purdue basketball coach and later assistant athletics director/sport administrator for swimming & diving, Purdue has once again partnered with Be The Match for a bone marrow donor registration drive. Reiter passed away in January 2014 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Be the Match will have a table set up on the mezzanine level of the aquatic center. Joining the registry is easy and can also be done electronically by going to Join.BeTheMatch.org/Purdue.

The Boilermakers celebrated the dawn of a new year and a new decade in Fort Lauderdale as part of their biennial winter training trip. The swimmers competed at the FIU Sprint Invite (Jan. 4) during the trip. The divers returned home Jan. 3, the women flew home on Jan. 6 and the men made the trek back north Jan. 9.

However, a quick turnaround between the end of a training trip has happened before. Most notably was the 2013-14 season when Purdue hosted both Michigan and Michigan State on consecutive days less than 24 hours after returning home from an extended training trip in Honolulu.

Nick McDowell has swept the distance events vs. the Spartans each of the last three years. Maizie Seidl and Jinq En Phee were also two-time winners last season in East Lansing. The Boilermakers competed at MSU's six-lane McCaffree Pool for the first time since January 2013.

A January dual meet against Michigan State has been a regular part of Purdue's schedule this century. The 2015-16 season stands as one of the few exceptions. The Boilermakers opened their campaign that season with an Oct. 2 outdoor triple dual in East Lansing that featured both Michigan and Michigan. It was unseasonably cold that Friday afternoon.

The Boilermakers also compete against Indiana, Minnesota and Northwestern over the next four weekends. They visit Bloomington on Jan. 25 for the annual rivalry dual. It's Purdue turn to host the annual Big Ten Triple Duals with the Gophers and Wildcats. The two-day meet is set for the Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.
