Along with Smith and Carpenter's record-setting performance in the mile, the Boilermakers broke a meet record, won three events, posted three runner-up showings and earned eight personal-record times.

In total, Purdue won eight events, helped set three meet records and notched 15 personal-best times at the two-day meet that featured eight top-25-ranked teams in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Boilermaker men placed fourth out of eight teams, with 78 points, and the women were fifth, with 53 points. The men, who are No. 38 nationally in the preseason rankings, finished ahead of three top-15 squads, while the No. 58-ranked women bested one top-25 opponent.

"Overall, I thought these last couple days were really good for us, I was really pleased in a lot of areas," Purdue coach Norbert Elliott said. "In particular our two milers, Brody and Jaret, who both broke the school record. Saran Kouyeth in the women's 400 did a fantastic job, so did Janae' Moffitt in the high jump yesterday, with a meet record and a really good mark for her going into the rest of the season. Jah Strange and Tamar Greene both had a really good series today on the triple jump as well. Those two guys were solid all of last year, and they started the year off in good shape, so they're continuing a good streak and good tradition.

"This was a really big, high-caliber meet, and our athletes showed good poise, so we're on the right track I think. We have a lot of work to do, but we're on the right track."

Smith and Carpenter's school record is the first of the 2019-20 season for the Boilermakers. Smith placed second overall in the men's mile event with a time of 4:01.92, while Carpenter was fourth, in 4:02.65. Both eclipsed the previous record of 4:03.64, set by Tate Schienbein in 2016.

It is the second time in as many years that Carpenter and Smith have teamed up to break a Purdue record in the same event, as they accomplished the feat in the 3,000-meter run on Jan. 26, 2019. In Fayetteville, Arkansas, it was Carpenter (8:00.67) who edged out Smith (8:02.15). On the indoor track, Carpenter also owns the program record in the 5,000, set last year with a time of 13:43.14.

"It felt really cool to break the school record, it's something I've always wanted to accomplish at Purdue, to have my name represent this school," Smith said. "To do it with Jaret, both of us breaking the record at the same time, is really special. It's the second time we've done it together. This is just moving the needle of the Purdue distance program in the right direction, so that's really good."

He placed first overall in the heats, with a time of 6.73, and bested it in the final with a winning time of 6.69 seconds. That would be the fifth-fastest time in program history, if he didn't already have the third-fastest (6.65) time in the record books.
