WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – While the Purdue men's tennis returned to campus for the fall semester and workouts, a member of the Boilermakers staff headed out for one of the biggest stages in world tennis.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – While the Purdue men's tennis returned to campus for the fall semester and workouts, a member of the Boilermakers staff headed out for one of the biggest stages in world tennis.

Assistant coach Francisco Stuardo Vargas went to Flushing Meadows, N.Y., to help coach Andrej Martin of Slovakia in the 140th edition of the U.S. Open. The world No. 98 singles player dropped his first round contest to No. 28 ranked Alex de Minaur from Australia. 

Another professional player who Stuardo Vargas is Chile's Cristian Garin. Working with his fellow countryman, Stuardo Vargas helped Garin move up to No. 18 in the world ATP rankings over the last year. knocked off Ulises Blanch from the United States in the first round over five sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5.

"Working with Andrej and Christian has been a great experience," Stuardo Vargas said. "Not only have I had the opportunity to work with one of the young stars of the game, but I am also able to take all the information and skills I have learned from his matches against the world's best back to West Lafayette to help our players grow."
