D1Baseball.com Summer Ball Watch
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Summer brings with it baseball weather in all its glory. Numerous Boilermakers are hoping to resume playing the game they love, with collegiate summer leagues potentially providing the first opportunity.
Returning and incoming Purdue players represent the program in the second season – wood bat summer leagues – across the country. In normal years, many collegiate summer leagues have schedules that run from late May to early August.
Justin Fugitt (June 1 with the Ohio Marlins) and Evan Albrecht (June 5 with the West Bend 7 Up) were the first Boilermakers to take the field this summer.
While selected summer leagues have already canceled their seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic, others remain hopeful for a July 1 start. Additional temporary leagues have also taken shape at centralized locations. Among the nearly two dozen Boilermakers planning to play this summer, the College Summer League at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, has proved to be a nice alternate option. Seven returning Boilermakers and two incoming freshmen are slated to play at Grand Park, with games potentially beginning the week of June 15 (if not sooner).
Mason Gavre, Jett Jackson and Jack Firestone were all committed to the Portland Pickles, but the West Coast League opted to announce the cancellation of its season on June 5. Locally, the Lafayette Aviators of the Prospect League were planning to play their home games at Alexander Field while construction of a new-look Loeb Stadium continued. Purdue University's mid-May decision to cancel all on-campus events through the end of July led to the cancellation of the Aviators' season. Two weeks later, the entire Prospect League announced its season was canceled. Mike Bolton Jr. and Jake Parr (both with the Cape Giradeau Catfish) were among the Boilermakers committed to a Prospect League team.
The remainder of the 2020 college baseball season was canceled by the NCAA on Thursday, March 12. All student-athletes that compete in spring sports have been granted an additional year of eligibility.
This page will be updated throughout the summer as additional players join teams and more information/links become available.
