WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women's tennis junior Zala Dovnik was named the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis association's Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship for the Ohio Valley Region, the organization announced Monday.
The honor is presented to the junior or senior player who has displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.
Dovnik was an anchor for the Boilermakers in 2019-20, posing a 13-7 record in singles action and 11-10 in doubles play. The Maribor, Slovenia, native went 7-2 in the spring between No. 5 and 6 singles, starting the season undefeated through her first eight matches in those spots.
In doubles play, Dovnik teamed up with Nathalia Wolf Gasparin to 5-5 in the spring, including a 3-0 mark at No. 3.
