Look back at Purdue softball highlights from the first 25 games

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Before the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19, the Purdue softball team (15-10) was off to one one of its strongest starts in recent history and was one of just four Big Ten programs to own at least 15 wins.

The Boilermakers closed the season ranked in multiple Big Ten categories. Purdue's bats were on fire beginning with the opening weekend, where 14 Boilermakers scored over the first five games for just the second time in over 21 years. Finishing the shortened season fourth in the Big Ten standings, Purdue celebrated three seniors: Alexa Binckes, Madison Douglass and Halle Hixenbaugh.


National Rankings
  • The Boilermakers ranked No. 11 in the nation with .44 triples per game (and most among Big Ten teams)
  • Skye Webb tied for No. 8 in the nation in triples (4)

Team Highlights
  • Purdue led the Big Ten in runs scored
  • Over Purdue's 25 games, the Boilermakers outscored opponents 137-93 and limited them to a .264 batting average
  • Boilermakers outscored their opponents 71-34 in their opening 11 games
  • In the opening weekend, Purdue recorded 42 runs and 41 RBI, the most RBI in over 21 years
  • Purdue shut out opponents four times this season, including North Carolina, which was receiving votes in the national polls
  • The team's four shutouts are the most since 2015*
  • Purdue run-ruled two teams: Akron and Florida Atlantic
  • Despite the shortened season, the team was just three triples shy of tying with the fifth-most triples in an entire Purdue season
* To compare with a shortened season, only games through March 8 of each year were considered

Individual Highlights
  • Six Boilermakers posted double-digit runs: Skye Webb (22), Rachel Becker (18), Kasey Wilhoit (15), Becca Jones (13), Madison Douglass (10) and Cora Bassett (10)
  • Seven Boilermakers produced home runs: Webb (4), Douglass (3), Wilhoit (2), Bassett (1), Binckes (1), Jones (1), and Rylee Platusic (1)
  • As a freshman, Bassett matched the season's game-high in hits, connecting on three in the season-opener versus Northern Illinois
  • Becker led the team with 84 at-bats, which led to 18 runs, 23 hits and 13 RBI
  • Pitcher Sydney Bates produced a 9-4 record and a team-leading 86 innings pitched
  • First baseman Kenzie Bolin tallied a team-best 128 putouts 
 
Purdue in the Big Ten Rankings
  • Team Batting: second, .286
  • The only B1G team with two batters ranking among the top five in triples: Skye Webb (No. 1 with 4) and Becca Jones (T-2 with 2)
  • Finished the shortened season ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten standings
  • One of only four Big Ten programs to post 15 wins in 2020.
  • Led the Big Ten with 137 runs
  • Was the only Big Ten program to produce 200 hits
  • Led the Big Ten with 127 RBI. Additionally, Purdue was one of only three teams to produce triple-digit numbers in the shortened season.
  • Produced the second-highest on-base percentage in the Big Ten (.365), trailing only Minnesota (.368)
