WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's first of two trips to the Upper Midwest this year presents the toughest test of the season as the Boilermakers square off against a trio of top-25 opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference at Minnesota's 2020 CambriaCollegeClassic.
It's Purdue, Iowa and Minnesota vs. Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State this weekend inside U.S. Bank Stadium, the home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.
The Boilermakers, who at 6-1 feature the best record in the Big Ten entering weekend No. 3, take on No. 14 Duke on Friday at 4 p.m. ET. No. 8 North Carolina State is Saturday's opponent at noon ET, as the two teams square off for the first time since March 1987. Purdue opens the month of March and closes out the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. ET vs. No. 23 North Carolina.
For the second weekend in a row, the Boilermakers are scheduled to face a Friday starter coming off a 15-strikeout performance. This week it's Duke ace Bryce Jarvis, who threw a perfect game last weekend vs. Cornell. Purdue faired just fine vs. Campbell's Cam Cowan last weekend after Cowan struck out 15 over 8 1/3 innings on opening day at nationally ranked South Alabama. The Boilermakers were able to chase him from the game in third inning and it was Trent Johnson who worked six innings of one-run ball. But Cowan was also a junior college transfer making his second start at the D-I level. Jarvis is a multi-year member of Duke's weekend rotation who shined in both his NCAA Regional (8 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 11 K at West Virginia) and Super Regional (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 9 K at Vanderbilt) starts last season.
Entering the weekend, the Boilermakers, Blue Devils (7-1), Wolf Pack (8-0) and Tar Heels (7-2) are a combined 28-4. The opposition is nationally ranked in multiple polls because of their early success, league in which they compete and 2019 success. A year ago, Duke won a Regional, North Carolina hosted a Regional and NC State was the No. 2 seed at a Regional. However, the three ACC foes have played all 25 of their combined games so far this season at home.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
• The last time Purdue played three different top-25 teams during the same weekend was February 2001 when the Boilermakers opened at Rice's Tournament. They defeated the No. 1 Owls on Friday, lost to No. 16 UCF on Saturday and won a quasi rubber game Sunday vs. No. 18 Wake Forest. That weekend helped get the program nationally ranked in the following week's Baseball America poll.
• Purdue is believed to have played only one other weekend indoors. That was an April 2009 series vs. Minnesota inside the Metrodome. The Gophers played in the Metrodome from 2004 to 2010. However, a May 2004 Purdue-Minnesota series was played on campus at Siebert Field. The teams did not play in 2006 and 2007, and Minnesota visited West Lafayette in 2005, 2008 and 2010.
• The Boilermakers returned to Minneapolis for the first weekend of Big Ten play in April 2011. But the series was moved to Target Field after the roof of the Metrodome collapsed during a blizzard in December 2010.
HATS OFF TO THE PITCHING STAFF
• While it's true Purdue extended its streak of big innings (4-plus runs) to eight consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season finale, it was really flawless defense and run prevention that helped the Boilermakers win the Campbell Invitational last weekend. They did not commit an error and surrendered only seven runs (2.3/game) in the three games after giving up 32 runs over four games (8/game) during the season-opening series vs. Hofstra. Overall, the defense has been charged with just three errors in the first seven games.
• The seven runs allowed is the fewest given up in a three-game weekend since limiting both Michigan and Rutgers to four runs in 2018 series sweeps at Alexander Field during the magical 21-2 stretch run. The Boilermakers surrendered only five runs in a March 2018 sweep at Penn State, marking the best the pitching staff had performed away from home as it did last weekend in Buies Creek.
DEFEATED 3 DIFFERENT OPPONENTS IN THE SAME WEEKEND (SINCE 2000)
• 2020 Campbell Invitational – Campbell, Maine. Villanova
• 2018 Big Ten Tournament – Ohio State, Michigan, Illinois
• 2018 Alamo Irish Classic – Saint Louis, Incarnate Word, Notre Dame
• 2012 Auburn Tournament – Auburn, Southern Miss, Western Carolina
• 2012 Big East/Big Ten Challenge – Connecticut, Cincinnati, Notre Dame
• 2003 Homestead, Florida Tournament – Detroit Mercy, Boston College, Sacred Heart
FAIR & NEUTRAL
Purdue's Neutral-Site Records the Last 3 Years
• 2020: 5-1
• 2019: 2-1
• 2018: 12-4
• Combined: 19-6
STATISTICALLY NOTABLE
• Zac Fascia leads Big Ten catchers with a 1.136 OPS. He has reached base safely in every game this season.
• Bo Hofstra has worked 5 2/3 hitless innings. Entering the week, it was the most innings in the Big Ten and seventh most nationally without allowing a hit. He also led the Big Ten with three saves and his 0.39 WHIP was No. 2 among pitchers with at least five innings pitched.
• In the Big Ten rankings, Purdue has two of the top four in RBI (Evan Albrecht 10, Skyler Hunter 9) and two of the top three in runs scored (Ben Nisle 11, Zac Fascia, 10).
• Cory Brooks is one of nine underclassmen in the country, and only pitcher in the Big Ten, with at least 10 innings pitched and no more than one run/five hits allowed.
