BUIES CREEK, N.C.
– Skyler Hunter's bases-clearing double punctuated a four-run second inning as Purdue baseball scored four-plus in an inning for the sixth consecutive game, riding the rally to a 6-2 victory vs. Maine on Saturday at the Campbell Invitational.

The Boilermakers won their fourth straight game and improved to 5-1 on the season, keeping pace with the program's 2012 and 2018 NCAA Regional teams for the best one-loss starts of this century. Purdue can win the four-team Campbell Invitational with a victory Sunday morning vs. Villanova.

Cory Brooks worked five shutout innings of one-hit ball, his second strong five-inning outing of the year. The right-hander has registered eight strikeouts vs. five hits allowed over 10 innings of one-run ball this season. He went 9-up, 9-down on his first trip through the Maine (0-5) lineup Saturday.

Andrew Bohm retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced while closing out the win, earning his first career save.

Hunter's two-out, three-run double was an opposite-field drive over the left fielder's head. Moments earlier, the Black Bears had registered a big out on a foul pop up behind home plate. But Hunter made sure the Boilermakers cashed in for the big inning. Evan Albrecht scored from first base on the two-bagger after he was hit by a pitch to force in the game's first run.

One of the biggest outs of Saturday's game was recorded at the plate. Maine had the tying run in scoring position when catcher Ryan Turenne tried to score on a wild pitch. The ball caromed off the backstop directly to catcher Bryce Bonner. He was able to flip the ball to Bohm covering for the second out. The batter at the plate walked, but Bohm escaped the jam by retiring the next batter. He went on to post consecutive 1-2-3 innings, striking out five of the five of nine batters at one point.

Sunday's game vs. Villanova is set for a 10 a.m. ET first pitch. Jett Jackson is slated to start on the mound.

SATURDAY NOTABLES
Purdue tacked on an insurance run in the seventh and eighth innings via sacrifice flies from Bryce Bonner and Skyler Hunter. The Boilermakers responded after Maine strung together five consecutive singles while scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Purdue already has nine sac flies this season after registering 16 in 2019.
For the second day in a row, the Boilermakers' starting pitcher did not have to pitch from the stretch until the fourth inning. Trent Johnson and Cory Brooks have combined for 11 innings of three-hit ball this weekend.
Skyler Hunter posted his fifth career four RBI game. He's just two RBI shy of the century mark for his career.
Ben Nisle's leadoff single ignited the four-run rally in the second inning. He has reached base safely and scored a run in each of the first six games.
Bonner recorded three more productive plate appearances, singling twice to go along with the sac fly. The senior is 6-for-12 with six RBI and a .588 on-base percentage this season.
Evan Albrecht also had three more productive plate appearances, highlighted by a leadoff double in the eighth inning. He has an RBI in all five games in which he has played and continues to lead the team with eight RBI.
Zac Fascia has hit safely in each of the first six games of the year. Dating back to April of last season, he has hit safely in 18 of the last 20.
Brooks worked 11 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his college career, a streak that was snapped on the final day of the regular season on a rare offensive day at Alexander Field. Exclude that outing vs. Ohio State and the redshirt sophomore has pitched 21 innings of one-run ball over his first seven career appearances for the Boilermakers.
