Purdue Opens Home Slate with Wins

Grit and determination led Purdue to a pair of wins in its home opener on Saturday. 

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's tennis team battled its way through two tough matches during Saturday's doubleheader against DePaul and Toledo. The Boilermakers stayed poised to sweep both contests and improve to 4-3 on the year.

PURDUE vs. DEPAUL
In the morning match of the doubleheader, the Purdue men's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to grind out a 4-3 win in their home opener against DePaul.

The Boilermakers dropped the doubles point, with losses No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 2, Julian Saborio and Michal Wozniak held a 4-3 lead against Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar when play was halted.    

Trailing 2-0 early in singles action, Saborio put the Boilermakers on the board with a straight set 7-6(4), 6-2 win at No. 6. Athell Bennett drew Purdue even at 2-2 after coming back from one set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1.

At. No. 4, Wozniak put the Boilermakers up by a point after sweeping Christopher Casati, 6-3, 6-4, giving Purdue a 3-2 lead. DePaul knotted things up at 3-3 with a win at No. 2 to send the deciding point to the fifth position.

For the second straight match, Sebastian Welch clinched victory for the hosts with a hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5.

PURDUE vs. TOLEDO
The Boilermakers had to fight through fatigue in the afternoon matchup with Toledo to come away with a 4-2 decision.

The Boilermakers had to grit out the doubles point. After Raupuk and Bennett cruised at No. 1 to a 6-0 win over Danilo Vukotic and Filip Zupancic, Purdue needed a tiebreak win from Saborio and Wozniak to clinch the frame. The duo topped Cole Shoults and Krzysztof Wetoszka 7-6(4).

Raupuk added to the lead from the No. 2 singles spot with a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory against Cole Shoults.

Following Toledo wins at No. 3 and 4, Julio overcame a first set defeat to oust Vukotic over three frames 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. Saborio then sealed the win for Purdue at No. 5. The senior had to fight off several match points to force a third set and win 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-0.

Purdue will host three matches next weekend. The Boilermakers will face Chicago State and IUPUI in a doubleheader on Saturday, before a Sunday contest against No. 2 Florida at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
