HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -
The Purdue wrestling team made big moves in the second session of the 57th-Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, piling up 49.5 points to climb to sixth in the team standings after the first day of competition. The Boilermakers have five athletes still alive in competition, including seniors Dylan Lydy and Christian Brunner and freshman Kendall Coleman, who all advanced to the semifinals.

"I'm really happy with how the guys performed this evening," said Purdue head coach Tony Ersland. "I challenged them after the first session to go do some things and they responded. To have us where we are in the team standings despite being down a few guys is pretty impressive and I look forward to seeing us finish the job tomorrow."

The Boilermakers were without juniors Devin Schroder and Max Lyon, who missed the tournament due to illness and injury, respectively. Schroder was slotted as the No. 3 seed at 125 pounds before withdrawing Sunday morning, while Lyon would have likely been seeded at 184 pounds.

Coleman rolled to the semifinals with a fall and two decisions at 157, including his 11-6 victory over No. 6 seed A.C. Headlee of North Carolina in the quarterfinals. Lydy defended his top seed at 174 pounds, taking down UNC's No. 8 seed Clay Lautt in the quarterfinals 5-2, and Brunner advanced through the quarters with his second win this season over Northwestern's Lucas Davison, 8-5.

Sophomore Parker Filius kept his placewinning hopes alive at 141 pounds with a pair of wins Sunday evening, taking out Fresno State's Lawrence Saenz and Franklin & Marshall's Wilfredo Gil. Filius is set to face 11th-seeded Salvatore Profaci of American in tomorrow's Round of 12.

Freshman Thomas Penola is one win from a spot on the heavyweight podium, taking down South Dakota State's Spencer Tienary and No. 9 seed Quinn Miller of Virginia to advance through Session 2. A pair of stalling calls were the difference against Tienary, and Penola capitalized on a fall in the third period against Miller, trailing 6-2 before putting the Cavalier on his back with 90 seconds to go in the match.

Action resumes Monday at noon CT, opening with the Round of 12 before starting the championship semifinals. They will wrestle the consolation quarterfinals and semifinals and the seventh-place matches before starting the final session at 7 p.m.
