HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Behind quarterfinal appearances from seniors Dylan Lydy and Christian Brunner and freshman Kendall Coleman, the Purdue wrestling team is in 13th place with 24 points after the first session of the 57th-annual Ken Craft Midlands Championships. Ten Boilermakers are still alive in competition, and seven able to score points for the Old Gold & Black as they continue action Sunday evening at 7 p.m. CT at the Sears Centre.
The top seed at 174 pounds, Lydy advanced with a major decision and a decision in his first two matches, while Brunner tacked on a pair of majors at 197 pounds and Coleman picked up a fall and a decision at 157 pounds, both competing as the No. 3 seeds.
On the consolation side of the brackets seven Boilermakers are still in play, battling for spots on the podium. Freshman Travis Ford-Melton and sophomore Marshall Craig are alive at 133 pounds, while Ford-Melton picking up a 30-second fall in his second bout, while sophomore Parker Filius was a last-second takedown from an opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals at 141. Both senior Nate Limmex and junior Griffin Parriott are in the 149-pound wrestlebacks, and sophomore David Eli and freshman Thomas Penola are still competing at heavyweight.
Tonight's session will include the quarterfinals and two rounds of consolation bouts, leaving the field with the semifinals and the Round of 12 in the morning.
