LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
Behind the efforts of six quarterfinalists, the Purdue wrestling team racked up 23 points and sits in ninth place after the first session of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday. Seniors Christian Brunner (197) and Dylan Lydy (174), juniors Devin Griffin Parriott (149) and Schroder (125) and freshmen Kendall Coleman (157) and Emil Soehnlen (165) all went 2-0 during the opening stanza of action and will wrestle for a spot in the semifinals tonight.

Soehnlen had the biggest win of the session, getting a fall in the final 10 seconds to pick up bonus points with his win over Ricky Padilla of Fresno State, while other bonus points came from Brunner, with a 15-6 major decision over Garrett Joles of Minnesota, and Lydy with a 15-5 major decision over Max Maylor of Michigan.

Both Brunner and Lydy needed some late heroics to pull out their second-round wins, as Brunner beat the buzzer with a takedown in a 3-1 win over No. 10 seed Lucas Davison of Northwestern, while Lydy had to go a full 11 minutes with Utah Valley's No. 14 seed Kimball Bastian, earning a 5-3, second-tiebreaker victory.

Coleman followed suit with an overtime victory over Cornell's Colton Yapoujian in the second round, stealing a takedown at the buzzer at the end of the eighth minute of action. Both Schroder and Parriott notched a pair decisions to advance, and will face the respective No. 6 seeds tonight for a spot in the semifinals.

Along with the six quarterfinalists, junior Max Lyon and freshman Thomas Penola are still alive in the consolation bracket at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively. Lyon won his first match of the session, a 6-4 decision over Virginia's Michael Battista, but fell to fifth-seeded Taylor Venz of Nebraska in his second. The 12th-seeded Boilermaker bounced back in the consolations with an injury default win over Kyle Davis of Sacred Heart, leading 9-0 in the second period before Davis surrendered the match. Penola drew into No. 3 seed Tanner Hall of Arizona State in his opener, falling 4-2, rebounded with a 10-5 win over Minnesota's Bobby Steveson and then advanced with a medical forfeit win over Ohio State's Chase Singletary.

Freshman Travis Ford-Melton and sophomore Alec White were eliminated Friday, as Ford-Melton was 1-2, while White suffered a pair of narrow losses.

Action resumes at 6 p.m. PT, and is airing live on FloWrestling. In tonight's session we will wrestle one round of championship action and one round of consolations.
