MEET INFORMATION
Purdue Men and Women at No. 10/3 Tennessee
Friday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. ET
Allan Jones Aquatic Center / Knoxville, Tennessee
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For its first road trip of the season and lone away meet of the fall for the full teams, Purdue swimming & diving makes a first-time visit to Knoxville for a co-ed dual meet with top-10 Tennessee.
It's a special 11 a.m. ET start Friday at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. The early starts assures the Boilermakers can make it to back to campus before midnight and thus have their customary Saturday morning practice.
The only change to the traditional 16-event dual format is the final race. Both genders are slated to compete in the 200 freestyle relay instead of the 400.
Purdue is returning the trip after the Volunteers ventured north last year for an early-November meet at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic. Wisconsin also joined the meet to make it a triple dual. It also started at 11 a.m. on a Friday, assuring UT could be back on campus by midnight.
Men's head coach Dan Ross says he has never coached in the state of Tennessee at any point during his 40-plus years associated with Purdue swimming & diving. UT's aquatic center served as the host pool of the 2014 AT&T USA Diving Senior National Championships. Alumnus Nate Cox (2012-15) and current Boilermaker Brandon Loschiavo both competed at that meet. Loschiavo was still in high school at the time, joining Purdue in the fall of 2016. He exercised an Olympic practice waiver this season and is not competing in NCAA meets.
KNOXVILLE CONNECTIONS
• Emily Bretscher and Gretta DeCoursey give the Boilermakers to two notable ties to Tennessee. Bretscher is a Knoxville native and won three consecutive Tennessee state titles on 1-meter at L&N STEM Academy. She swept the springboard events in the triple dual vs. UT and UW last year, winning Big Ten Diver of the Week for her accomplishment.
• DeCoursey's brother Kyle was a multi-year All-American for the Volunteers, excelling in the sprint freestyle events. He closed out his college career in the spring, making the Purdue-Tennessee meet in West Lafayette a year ago a big deal for the DeCoursey family. Their mother Ginger DeCoursey (1990-93) is also a former Purdue swimmer.
• The 2016-17 season is believed to be the last time that Purdue swimming & diving student-athletes had an opportunity to compete in their hometowns as Boilermakers. Chris Bals, Adam Noens and Morgan Meixner all had the honor. Bals raced in South Bend for an October dual at Notre Dame. Noens was among the four Boilermakers selected to race on the Big Ten team at the USA College Challenge in Indianapolis in November. Meixner also competed in her native Indianapolis that month at IUPUI's House of Champions Invitational.
• Jinq En Phee (100 breast) joined Bretscher as Purdue's active event winners in last year's November triple dual. Megan Johnson (200 free), Courtney Kresl (50 free), Ryan Lawrence (50 free) and Nick McDowell (200 fly) also won their heats.
VOLUNTEERS RANKED AMONG THE TOP 10
• The Tennessee men and women are both 4-0 in dual meet action this season. They've swept co-ed duals vs. UNC Wilmington, South Carolina, Virginia and Louisville. The men's dual at UofL was decided by just one point. The Cavaliers were both ranked among the top five at the time of that dual. The Vols' sweep of UVa led to their big jump in the coaches poll. The women rose from No. 15 to No. 3 and the men climbed from No. 16 to No. 10.
• Tennessee and Virginia were originally scheduled to travel to Ann Arbor for a triple dual with Michigan on Oct. 18 to 19, but the visiting teams opted to cancel the trip based on concerns about a common waterborne illness at Canham Natatorium. Michigan officials stated the pool had been declared safe for use twice before the meet was scheduled to be held.
DID YOU KNOW
• The 425-mile trip from West Lafayette to Knoxville is Purdue's longest bus trip since the swimmers competed at Virginia Tech's H20kie Invitational in November 2016. West Lafayette to Christiansburg was 525 miles.
