WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With less than a week before the opening tip of the 2019-20 Purdue women's basketball season, Ae'Rianna Harris added another laurel to her preseason honors list. On Tuesday, the senior was named to the Women's Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List, the award presented to the national player of the year.
Harris' name has been invoked plenty of times during the runup to the season. The Indianapolis native was tabbed Preseason All-Big Ten, Lisa Leslie Award Watch List and the 24th ranked player in the nation by ESPNW.
The 6-foot-1 forward rewrote the record books in just three years, breaking the program record for career blocks, blocks in a season for sophomores and juniors and the single-game field goal percentage.
Harris is one-of-two players in Big Ten history to post at least two seasons with 300 points, 300 rebounds and 100 blocked shots. She is on pace to be the fifth member from the Big Ten to join the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound and 300-block club.
Tuesday's announcement featured 50 players. The midseason 30-player team will be announced in early February, and then the competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists on March 3, 2020. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 20, 2020, and the winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 4, 2020.
The Boilermakers will open the 2019-20 season Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at Mackey Arena against Milwaukee. It will be Boilermaker Kid's Club Day and Service Appreciation Day. Any current or retired military members, police officers, firefighters or hospital staff can purchase a discounted general admission ticket by calling 765.494.3194 or by visiting the ticket box office at Mackey Arena.
