Doubles Wins Highlight First Day of Fall

The Purdue men's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday with the Purdue Invitational at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers recorded a trio of wins in singles play and a perfect 2-0 record in doubles action.

The Purdue men's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday with the Purdue Invitational at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers recorded a trio of wins in singles play and a perfect 2-0 record in doubles action.

Maksymilian Raupuk had the most impressive win of the day. Down a set, behind 5-2 in the second and trailing 40-Love, the Polish international staved off a match point to beat Sean Bailey from IUPUI 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round of Flight A. Raupuk fell in his afternoon contest to set up a Saturday showdown against Chris Casati of DePaul.

Tomasz Dudek followed suit with a three-set win in Flight B against Raul Teichmann of Cleveland State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. He dropped his second-round contest in the afternoon and will face Gabriel Carvajal from Valparaiso on Saturday.

Sebastian Welch made quick work of his first Purdue match with a straight-set victory over Georgi Mavrodiev of Dayton, the No. 2 seed in Flight B. The Chilean will look to rebound from a defeat in the second round when he faces Vince Orlando from Ball State on Saturday.

Julian Saborio will play Aaron Thompson from Xavier in the consolation round of the C draw on Saturday.

In doubles action, the Boilermakers notched a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals. Welch and Saborio teamed up to down Jack Santilli and Teichmann from Cleveland State in Flight A. The tandem will meet Fabien Salle and Sergio Hernandez from Louisville on Saturday.

Raupuk and Dudek held on to beat Phillip Leithold and Andrej Kalenic of Valparaiso, 6-4, in the B draw. The duo will see Army West Point's David Gorshein and Sameul Eden in the next round.

The tournament continues Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. with two rounds of doubles action, followed by a round of singles.

Athell Bennett and Mateo Julio were held out of the Purdue Invitational in preparation for the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., which starts Saturday.
