WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Gold Team connected for three extra-base hits in a span of five batters during a four-run rally, responding with a big inning after giving up a three-spot in the previous frame and salvaging a 5-5 draw in game 2 of Purdue baseball's Black & Gold Series on Friday at Alexander Field.
The game was stopped after 5 ½ innings due to practice time limits during the fall ball season. Saturday's series finale is slated for 1 p.m. ET and is again open to the public. The Black Team won Thursday's series opener 4-0.
As the Black Team's starting pitcher, Andrew Bohm retired nine of the 11 batters he faced, including the first seven. He struck out the side in his third and final inning. Conner Tomasic struck out the Black Team's 1-2-3 hitters in order in the bottom of the fifth.
Mike Bolton Jr.'s two-run double was the big hit of a three-run third inning for the Black Team. But Zac Fascia led off the top half of the following frame with a double to right field, igniting the Gold Team's four-run rally. Miles Simington's RBI double and Jack Firestone's RBI triple in the inning also went to right.
Skyler Hunter and Zander Adams both delivered two-out RBI singles for the Gold Team.
Luke Houin's sacrifice fly plated the tying run for the Black Team in the fourth inning. He also delivered the second of four consecutive hits for his side in the previous frame. Mason Gavre doubled for the second day in a row, leading off the bottom of the fourth with his two-bagger. He scored on an RBI single from Justin Fugitt.
Eric Hildebrand was effective in relief for the Black Team, retiring seven of 10 batters faced over 2 2/3 innings. He worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth vs. the Gold Team's 2-3-4 hitters.
Zach Daugherty and Firestone both reached base safely twice on the day.
