MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Purdue women's tennis team rolled on the opening day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Thursday. The Boilermakers totaled eight wins across the singles and doubles main flights to set up multiple contests on Friday.
Purdue bookended the day with the first and second rounds of doubles action. The Boilermakers went 4-2 on the afternoon in tandem play.
Seira Shimizu and Nikol Dobrilova held off Southeast Missouri's Rarajova and Kseniya Zonova to win 8-5. The first-time pairing was the lone Boilermaker team to make it to the round of 16, after an 8-5 win over the No. 9 seed Diana Tkachenko and Carlota Molina from Kentucky.
The two other doubles teams won their opening match but fell in the second round. Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor cruised to an 8-4 victory against Raven Neely and Diana Wong of Louisville. Alex Sabe and Zala Dovnik ousted Noelle Mauro and Muskan Gupta from Middle Tennessee State, 8-3.
In singles action, five of Purdue's seven entrants were in action, with a quartet advancing to the second round on Friday.
Dovnik won in straight sets against Fabienne Schmidt from Appalachian State, 6-4, 6-4. She will face No. 9-seeded Raven Neely from Louisville on Friday. Nathalia Wolf Gasparin quickly dispatched Gabriell Ochalik from IUPUI, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a match against the No. 17 seed Andrea Larrinaga in the second round.
Shimizu easily topped Lidia Burrows from Middle Tennessee State over two sets, 6-4, 6-0. The junior will meet Rhea Verma of Louisville on Friday. After a tight first set, Sabe dispatched Muskan Gupta of Middle Tennessee State in straight sets, 7-5(4), 6-0. The senior will meet No. 9-seeded Aran Teixido-Garcia from Memphis in the next round.
Fodor and Babic received byes on Thursday as the No. 9 and No. 5 seeds. Fodor will play Lexi Kubas from Indiana, while Babic will face Danielle Morris of Appalachian State on Friday.
