URBANA, Ill. – The Purdue men's and women's cross country team opened the 2019 slate with a 1-2 finish, respectively, at the Illini Open. The men's victory was earned after scoring 25 team points, while the women posted 53 for the runner-up position.
The Boilermakers dominated the men's top 10, with six finishing back-to-back, to produce the most top 10 finishes by any program. Kyle Griffith led Purdue to victory after clocking in a 25:30.2 8k, meanwhile teammate Alec Fleming also earned the same time, but was edged out at a closer look at their extended times.
Megan Slamkowski ran the fastest women's 5k time at the Open after placing fifth with a time of 17:24.0. Newcomer Meagan Hathaway stole a top-10 finish alongside Slamkowski, after timing in at 17:44.6, a solid six seconds faster than the 11th-place finisher. In total, six women's runners earned top-20 times.
Purdue will be back in action at the John McNichols Invite on Saturday morning, September 21.
