WEST LAFYAETTE, Ind. The Purdue men's and women's cross country team opens the 2019 season Friday at the Illini Open.

The women will kick off the new year with their 5k race slated start at 6 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the men will follow with the 8k at 6:40 p.m. ET. Results will be available following the meet on FightingIllini.com.

This season, the Boilermakers welcomed five women and six men to the roster. Among the newcomers, Meagan Hathaway and twins Ellie and Emma Tate are set to make the trip west.

The men's program is coming off its best season in over 30 years. Prior to the Boilermakers securing their spot at the national championships, Jaret Carpenter was named the men's Great Lakes runner of the year after winning the regional. Moreover, three Boilermakers earned top-20 finishes at the Big Ten Championships (including two in the top 10) and a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.

A year ago, the women competed at the Illini Open, where Mary Abramson won with a time of 18:05.5—over 13 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. With the victory, Abramson was awarded Big Ten Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week, as voted on by the conference office.
