Meitz Wins Twice to Headline Counsilman Classic

A pair of victories for alumna Kaersten Meitz highlighted the top showings by Purdue swimmers in long-course action at the Counsilman Classic.

INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of victories for alumna Kaersten Meitz highlighted the top showings by Purdue swimmers in long-course action at the Counsilman Classic last week at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

Meitz was victorious in the 400- and 800-meter freestyle. She also took third in the 200 free. Trent Pellini (50 free, 100 fly, 100 breast) and Nick McDowell (distance free) also finished among the top 10 in three different events. Jinq En Phee placed fourth in both breaststroke races.

Natalie Myers (200 and 400 IM), Evan King (200 fly) and Riley Kishman (100 fly) also posted at least one top-10 finish.

With the FINA World Championships (July 12-28 in Gwangju, South Korea) and World University Games (July 2-8 in Napes, Italy) on the schedule for July, the Counsilman Classic featured the most accomplished field of any in-state meet this summer. Along with the Boilermakers, it included swimmers from Indiana, Michigan, Louisville, Notre Dame and numerous top-level clubs from around the Midwest. Purdue's swimmers competed as part of the Boilermaker Aquatics club.

The summer long-course season features events with 50-meter lengths (LCM) of the pool. During the college season, events are measured in yards (SCY) and feature 25-yard lengths of the pool.

Meitz returns to the World University Games as part of the U.S. roster next month. Phee is expected to race for her homeland Malaysia at the World Championships.

Last month, McDowell was the top men's scorer at Boilermaker Aquatics' annual Early Bird Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. He won the 200, 400 and 800 free as well as the 200 butterfly. Nikola Acin (50 and 100 free, 100 back), Nathan Barsanti (100 fly), Will Schrensky (200 breast), Meitz (400 and 800 free), Myers (200 and 400 IM) Phee (100 and 200 breast), King (200 fly) and alum Marat Amaltdinov (100 breast) also won events at the Early Bird meet.

Boilermaker Aquatics hosts the Boiler Bash Invitational this weekend (June 21-23) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The annual Indiana Senior State Championships are July 18 to 21 back at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
