WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women's tennis senior Silvia Ambrosio was unanimously selected to the All-Big Ten team Friday, one of 14 student-athletes honored by the conference coaches and one of six selected unanimously. She is the 15th player in program history to earn all-conference recognition and the first since 2013.
Ambrosio has earned a national ranking in every weekly poll of the season, including the highest ranking in program history as she climbed to No. 9 in the nation Feb. 6. The mark came on the heels of a four-game winning streak, including two victories over ranked opponents.
Ambrosio also secured a doubles ranking with classmate Amina Mukhametshina, breaking into the national poll March 5 at No. 77. The pair rose as high as No. 44 in the rankings and recorded 14 wins this season.
Ambrosio was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 29, defeating a pair of ranked opponents on the road, including No. 43 Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse. She holds a 14-7 singles record at the No. 1 position, including three ranked wins. She also claimed a 10-game winning streak in Big Ten play, losing only once.
Ambrosio's season will continue in the NCAA Championships from May 20 to 25 in Orlando, Florida.
Sophomore Zala Dovnik also won a Big Ten honor, selected as Purdue's All-Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree. Dovnik's consistent positive attitude wasn't the only force that helped the Boilermakers this year. She took down Skyler Miller of No. 28 Oklahoma 6-2, 6-3, as well as a commanding sweep over Rutger's Kristian Zahare 6-0, 6-0.
