WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue wrestlers Kendall Coleman and Thomas Penola captured All-America honors at the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships on Saturday. Coleman placed seventh at 70 kg and Penola finished sixth at 86 kg while representing the Boilermaker RTC at the South Point Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With their top-eight finishes, Coleman and Penola have qualified for the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament to be held May 16 to 18 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Coleman wrestled true to seed, defeating Jaden Van Maanen of the Bison Wrestling Club 8-6 in the seventh-place match at 70 kg. The freshman Boilermaker finished the tournament with a mark of 5-2 for his second All-America honor from the tournament in as many years. Coleman placed sixth at 65 kg at the 2018 edition of the tournament.
Penola was unseeded at 86 kg and won four matches on his way to a sixth-place performance. Among his four wins was an 8-2 upset of fifth-seeded Jack Jessen of Northwestern in the championship third round. Victor Marcelli of the Cavalier Wrestling Club denied Penola in the fifth-place match, taking a 10-0 victory in 1:40.
Alec White lost one match short of securing a top-eight finish at 65 kg. White won his first two matches, needing just 30 seconds to post a 10-0 technical fall against Connor Mares of The Wrestling Factory of Cleveland, followed by a 9-2 decision over Valley RTC's Lawrence Saenz.
Emil Soehnlen and Jared Florell both went 1-2 wrestling at 86 kg.
