WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue men's tennis (9-11, 3-6) heads out on their last road trip and final two matches of the regular season. The Boilermakers take on No. 1 Ohio State Friday at 6 p.m. ET in Columbus, Ohio at the Varsity Tennis Center, and No. 34 Penn State Sunday at noon in University Park, Pa. at the Sarni Tennis Center.
The Boilermakers are coming off a strong weekend that featured a pair of wins, including a 4-3 upset over No. 46 Iowa. Junior Athell Bennett led Purdue with a pair of singles victories at the No. 1 spot, while Franz Luna secured the victory over the Hawkeyes with a win over Joey Tyler 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(4).
Bennett has won his last two ranked matchups, with a victory over Minnesota's No. 61 Josip Krstanovic 6-2, 6-3 and Nebraska's No. 114 Toby Boyer 6-3, 6-2. Mateo Julio also boasts a recent ranked win with his upset over Michigan's No. 46 Mattias Siimar 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The Buckeyes are almost ranked across the board with four individuals holding top marks and four doubles teams tabbed inside the top 50. JJ Wolf is ranked No. 1 in the country, while John McNally is 23rd, Kyle Seelig is 56th and James Trotter is No. 103. Hunter Tubet and Martin Joyce are the No. 9 pair in the nation, followed by Kyle Seeib and Alex Kobelt at No. 28.
The Nittany Lions have two individuals and one doubles pair with national credentials, led by No. 25 singles player Constant De La Bassetiere. He also teams with Gabriel Nemeth to field the No. 34 doubles team in the country.
