WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis took the fight to No. 46 Iowa on Saturday, upsetting the Hawkeyes 4-3 at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
With the score deadlocked 3-3, it all came down to the Boilermakers' Franz Luna and the Hawkeyes' Joe Tyler. Luna fought hard to claim victory 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (4).
Maksymilian Raupuk and Luna gained the first Boilermaker victory when they defeated Nikita Snezhko and Tyler 6-2 in No. 3 doubles. Despite the victory. Iowa took the doubles point with victories at the one and two positions.
The first singles victory was claimed by the Hawkeyes, but the Boilermakers answered right back with two back-to-back victories. Santiago Galan defeated Piotr Smientana 6-3, 6-1, followed by Athell Bennett's win over Kareem Allaf 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
With the score tied 2-2, Iowa went ahead after Raupuk fell in a hard-fought third setter, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Stephan Koenigsfest tied it up for the Boilermakers with a victory in the tie breaker over Will Davies 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (4).
The Boilermakers (9-10, 2-6) will be back in action Sunday for the last home match of the season against Nebraska at noon ET.
