WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's tennis (5-6) will host two Big Ten teams this weekend to kick off conference play.
The Boilermakers will take on Illinois (5-6, 0-1) on Saturday and Northwestern (7-5, 1-0) on Sunday. Both matches will be played indoors at the Schwartz Tennis Center beginning at noon ET.
Senior Silvia Ambrosio remains in the singles rankings at No. 31. Ambrosio and classmate Amina Mukhametshina broke into doubles rankings this week at No. 77. Illinois' Asuka Kawai broke into the rankings for the first time this season at No. 57. Northwestern has two doubles partners in the rankings, Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan at No. 32 and Lee Or and Inci Ogut at No. 68.
Series History
Purdue leads the series against Illinois 31-28. The last two times the Boilermakers defeated the Fighting Illini they were nationally ranked. In the 2013 regular season, Purdue took down No. 36 Illinois in West Lafayette 5-4. The two met later in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, where the Boilermakers defeated No. 37 Illinois 4-2 to move into the semifinals.
In 2011, the Boilermakers took down No. 11 Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament 4-2. Purdue looks to repeat that success and take down the Wildcats for the first time since then.
