Men's Tennis Wins Twice

Purdue men's tennis defeated Marquette and Green Bay on Saturday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's tennis hosted two teams at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Saturday and came away with two victories.

The first match was a real nail-biter against Marquette, with the Boilermakers securing the victory 4-3. The second match against Green Bay added another win to the Boilermaker tally 4-0.

Purdue trailed Marquette 2-3 before Franz Luna defeated Fran San Andres on court six 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6-3) to tie up the score.

Then, the match came down to court one between Athell Bennett and Luke Smrek. Bennett came out victorious over the Golden Eagles' No. 1 player 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The Boilermakers grabbed a 1-0 lead with the doubles point. Bennet and Luna defeated Greg Anderson and Andres 6-4. Dominik Sochurek and Maksymilian Raupuk fell to Alvaro Verdu and Luis Heredia Gomes 4-6. Decision for the doubles point came down to Mateo Julio and Stephan Koenigsfest. They rose to the challenge to defeat Luke Smrek and Brett Meyers 7-5.

In singles, Koengisfest began the battle off strong for the Boilermakers, defeating Greg Anderson 6-2, 6-4 on court four.

Against Green Bay, the Boilermakers started off strong once again, earning the doubles point. Bennett paired up with Luna to defeat Charlie Ridout and Lachlan Napier 6-4. Sochurek and Raupuk defeated James Ling and Miles McDowall in a close showdown 6-6 (6-3). Julio and Koenigsfest toppedDipin Wadhwa and Charlie Croxford 6-3.

Koenigsfest began singles play off right for the Boilermakers, finishing first at the No. 4 spot. He defeated Napier 6-1, 6-3. Julio defeated Wadhwa 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to to put the Boilermakers ahead 3-0. The final point came at the No. 5 position, where Santiago Galan defeated McDowall 6-2, 7-5.

The Boilermakers (4-1) are back in action Feb. 10 at Northwestern for their first Big Ten match.
