ATLANTA
– Purdue's Joe Cifelli posted a team season-high score on the 1-meter springboard in the prelim and performed well again in the final to win silver via a runner-up finish Wednesday at the USA Diving Winter Trials.

Cifelli posted his best career finish in an individual event at a USA Diving national meet. He placed second behind the University of Miami's Briadam Herrera. A year ago, Cifelli and Herrera teamed up to win silver together in synchronized 3-meter at the USA Diving Winter Nationals.

Cifelli's prelim score of 372.50 is good for fifth best in the Big Ten this season as well as a season high by a Boilermaker. He (712.85) and Herrera (794.55) were the only divers to exceed 700 points over their two lists. They opened up large leads on the rest of the 23-diver field after the prelim. Cifelli had a 45-point lead on third place following the prelim. With scores carrying over from the prelim to final this week, Cifelli essentially clinched his place on the podium in the prelim. He posted a list score of 340.35 in the final.

Herrera also impressed with list scores of 411.35 in the prelim and 383.20 in the final. Those were the top two list scores in the entire field Wednesday.

Cifelli's third- (69, 70.5) and sixth-round dives (73.6, 70.4) of both the prelim and final earned the top scores among the entire field in those rounds.

The USA Diving Winter Trials are serving as a qualifier for the 2019 World University Games and selected FINA Diving Grand Prix meets. Cifelli's showing does not guarantee him a place at the World University Games, but it puts him position to be selected. He competed on 1-meter for the USA at the 2017 World University Games. As a senior this season, Cifelli would still be eligible for the 2019 WUG after closing out his Purdue career in March.

Cifelli is slated to compete again Thursday on 3-meter. He'll be joined in the event by teammate Greg Duncan and Purdue alumnus David Boudia. Emily Bretscher also competes in the women's 1-meter event Thursday. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET.
