0No. 14 Purdue rallied to defeat Michigan State, 3-1 on the road for the first time since the 2015 season.

EAST LANSING, MI – Led by double-digit kills from freshman Grace Cleveland and sophomore Caitlyn Newton, the No. 14 Purdue volleyball team rallied to defeat Michigan State, 3-1 (15-25, 35-12, 25-19, 25-17), on the road for the first time since the 2015 season.

Cleveland directed Purdue (14-3, 3-3 Big Ten) with 15 winners, while Newton racked up 12. Redshirt senior Sherridan Atkinson and redshirt junior Blake Mohler followed with nine and six kills, respectively. Redshirt freshman Hayley Bush was just one dig away from claiming another double-double on the season after dishing out a match-high 37 assists in addition to collecting nine digs. Meanwhile, senior Brooke Peters led the Boilermakers' back-row effort with a match-high 17 digs.

Michigan State (14-5,2-4 Big Ten) received 12 winners from Alyssa Chronowski, while Maddie Haggerty chipped in 10. Samantha McLean led the Spartans with 12 digs and Elena Shklyar dished out 24 assists.

The Spartans controlled the tempo of the first stanza, jumping out to a 15-7 advantage. MSU led from the first serve and cruised the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Chronowski chalked up four putaways to pace Michigan State's .273 hitting percentage in the frame. Purdue fell short on the attack and was limited to a .000 clip in the set.

Relentless, the Boilermakers opened the second set with a 3-1 run over the Spartans. MSU battled back to come within one at 5-4, before Purdue delivered a 5-1 run for a 10-5 lead. Fueled by five kills from Newton on seven swings with no errors, the Boilermakers utilized a .458 hitting clip, while limiting MSU to a .030 mark, for a 25-12 victory.

With the match tied 1-1, Purdue grabbed seven of the first eight points in the third stanza, forcing the Spartans to a timeout. With three Boilermakers earning four digs apiece, Purdue restricted MSU to only seven kills to keep control and take a 2-1 advantage with a 25-19 third-set victory.
 
Guided by five kills from Haggerty, Michigan State opened the fourth frame with 10-6 lead, before a trio of Spartan miscues and a kill from freshman Jael Johnson knotted the set at 12. The teams tied the set four more times, but a Newton putaway sparked a 9-1 Purdue run to end the back-and-forth.  The match came to an end on back-to-back kills from Newton with Purdue securing the set, 25-17 and the match, 3-1.

Big Ten actions continues Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in Holloway Gymnasium as the Boilermakers host Penn State in their 12th home match of the season. To buy tickets, click here.
