WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's fall exhibition slate at Alexander Field features six games this month, highlighted by Saturday matinees against NJCAA opponents also coming off successful 2018 seasons.
All October games at Alexander Field are open to the public and feature free admission. The Boilermakers' annual Old Gold & Black Series is once again a three-game intrasquad set. Dates are set for Oct. 23, Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. Full fall practice officially began Sept. 13 and wraps up with the conclusion of the Old Gold & Black Series.
The NCAA now allows Division I programs to play two fall exhibition games that do not count towards the 56-game schedule a team plays in the spring. Previously, teams also had to certify a 35-man roster to play any fall exhibition games. Another special exemption is permitted for a game against a foreign travel team like the Fieldhouse Pirates (Burlington, Ontario), which visit Alexander on Oct. 12.
Based in Champaign and Bloomington, Illinois, Parkland College and Heartland College are both NJCAA Division II programs that compete in the Mid-West Athletic Conference and Region 24. They posted a combined 97-26-1 record in the spring, meeting in the championship game of the Region 24 Tournament. Parkland went on to qualify for the championship round of the NJCAA DII World Series in Enid, Oklahoma.
Mark Wasikowski and the Purdue coaching staff have begun recognizing the program's top performers this fall with player and pitcher of the week honors. Honorees so far include…
• Week 1: Ben Nisle (Player) and Ryan Beard (Pitcher)
• Week 2: Zac Fascia (Player) and Patrick J. Smith (Pitcher)
Smith pitched for Heartland in 2016 and 2017 before joining the Boilermakers as a transfer last fall. The left-hander is one of just three seniors on Purdue's roster this year. Fascia is one of 18 newcomers on the roster this fall. A native of Brampton, Ontario, and transfer from Indian Hills College in Ottumwa, Iowa, Fascia is one of four catchers on Purdue's fall roster. He was selected in the 37th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Mets.
Parkland College's notable baseball alumni include former Boilermakers Nick Wittgren (2011-12), Brett Haan (2014-15) and Ross Learnard (2017-18) as well as Tampa Bay Rays gold glove center fielder Kevin Kiermaier. Kiermaier signed a National Letter of Intent to join Purdue for the 2010-11 school year, but opted to sign with the Rays after being drafted that summer.
Heartland is coached by Iowa alumnus Jimmy Frankos. The multi-year starting catcher for the Hawkeyes played at Alexander Field in each of the ballpark's first three seasons from 2013 to 2015. Iowa was the only Big Ten team to visit West Lafayette all three years during that stretch. Coincidentally, Purdue and Iowa have only played one series since – March 2017 in Iowa City.
