LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 18 nationally-ranked Purdue men's cross country team produced its best performance in 33 years as the program earned second place at the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday.

The men's program secured the runner-up spot with 88 points, which also stands as a team best, dating to 1985. First-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-Big Ten honorees Jaret Carpenter and Curt Eckstein led the Boilermaker pack with a pair of top-10 finishes.

Carpenter placed fifth after recording a time of 23:44.1 for his best time since the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Sept. 28. Moreover, Carpenter shaved off 33 seconds from his time at the Big Ten Championships a year ago. Meanwhile, coming in ninth overall was Eckstein with a time of 23:47.7, which was an improvement over his time of last year by an impressive 51 seconds.

On the men's side, five Boilermakers produced top-30 finishes, compared with three a year ago. Additionally, Big Ten Championship returners Carpenter, Eckstein and Jacob Hanawalt combined to shave off over two minutes from their times in 2017.

Sophomore Brody Smith earned 17th place in just 24:09.2, while Bailey McIntire was the fourth Boilermaker to cross the finish line in 24:25.2 for 27th place. Hanawalt followed closely behind in 30th place with a time of 24:26.6, while Kyle Griffith tallied 49th place with a time of 24:54.3.

"I am very happy and proud of our men's team," head coach Norbert Elliott said . "This was a momentous day for us to earn the best men's finish since 1985. We were able to place Jaret and Curt on the podium with top-10 finishes. They have been consistently strong all season, and today proves that it was no fluke. Congratulations to coach (John) Oliver for getting them ready."

The Purdue women's team recorded 10th place, led by Emma Benner. The junior continued her tradition of registering the top Purdue time this year with her 20:57.9 minute 6k and 32nd-place finish.
