WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue swimming & diving teams open the dual meet portion of their seasons with the annual matchup against their top non-conference rival, Notre Dame.

The co-ed dual at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend is slated to get underway at 5 p.m. The traditional 16-event dual format will comprise the order of events.

In the latest top-25 poll released this week by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, the UND women are ranked 13th and the men 18th. The Purdue men are 25th in the rankings.

Senior Emily Meckstroth (Granger/Penn HS) and first-year men's assistant Brian Barnes (Osceola) both have roots in the Greater South Bend area. Meckstroth was part of a swim club that trained at UND's aquatic enter. Barnes was the head coach of the Notre Dame women's program from 2008 to 2014.

As a freshman in the fall of 2016, Nick McDowell swept the 500 and 1,000 free at Notre Dame in his first road trip as a Boilermaker. He and Meckstroth, Purdue's top distance performers this season, both won multiple races during the season-opening weekend (Oct. 13-14).

The Fighting Irish's top performers will visit the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center the weekend of Nov. 10 to 11, competing for the Atlantic Coast Conference team at the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The co-ed all-star meet is slated to feature student-athletes from 29 universities – 14 from the Big Ten and 15 from the ACC.

Notre Dame is the first of seven opponents that Purdue will compete against this season for dual meet action. Four of those matchups will be as part of triple duals. The Boilermakers host Tennessee and Wisconsin next week for a special Friday afternoon meet. The annual Big Ten Triple Duals with Minnesota and Northwestern will be held in Evanston the first weekend of February this season.

Notre Dame already has a combined nine dual meet results on its schedules, competing against Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Georgia Tech and the University of Miami (women) so far this month. The UND women are 4-0-1, with the unlikely draw coming against IU. The UND men are 1-3, highlighted by a two-point victory at Georgia Tech last weekend.

QUOTING THE COACHES
John Klinge: "It's just fun to get some racing in. I think that's what everyone loves about college swimming – the dual meet season. Going head-to-head with a team and really getting four great races in, in about two hours."
Dan Ross: "I thought we had some great performances all across the board [during the opening weekend]. A really good attitude, good culture. From the first meet on Friday to Saturday I saw some people improve, like figure some things out. As they always say in football, between the first and second weeks you see the biggest improvement, hopefully we're going to see some big improvements going into the Notre Dame meet. We've had two really good weeks of training."
