Purdue women's cross country senior Mary Abramson was announced as the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women's cross country senior Mary Abramson was announced as the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.

Abramson garners her first Big Ten award following a first-place finish at the Illini Open. The Avon, Indiana, native secured the first victory of her collegiate career with a time of 18:05.5, which paced the 5k race by over 13 seconds. At the split, Abramson clocked in at 8:44.3 minutes.

Overall, Purdue has earned two cross country weekly awards during the 2018 campaign with Jaret Carpenter securing the men's honor Oct. 17. This marks the first time in program history Purdue has earned weekly honors for the men and women in back-to-back occurrences. Additionally, Abramson's award is the first women's cross country weekly honor since Emma Benner's recognition Sept. 20, 2017.

Both the men's and women's teams are set to compete Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska.
