MADISON, Wis. – The Purdue cross country team produced a pair of stellar performances in its toughest meet yet of the 2018 season. In the midst of 19 nationally-ranked programs, the Purdue men's cross country team snagged a ninth-place finish in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
Jaret Carpenter led the men's team with an 8k time of 23:38.5 and a 14th-place finish, which is the third-fastest time in a men's 8k in program history. Followed by Carpenter was Curt Eckstein, who finished 30th with a time of 23:51.3, which sits as the seventh-fastest time by a Boilermaker.
The Purdue women's team solidified 22nd-place in a field that saw 40 percent of the nation's top-20 teams. Emma Benner, who raced in her first meet of the season, secured a 6k time of 21:02.4 and 78th-place while Jenna Halderman followed with 88th-place and a time of 21:07.6 . The duo also cracked Purdue's top-10 list, coming in at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.
On the men's side, Brody Smith was the third Boilermaker past the finish line, clocking in at 24:01.6 (48th) while Theo Burgwald finished in 24:22.7 (85th), Kyle Griffith in 24:47.1 (140th), Jacob Hanawalt in 24:48.6 (143rd) and Bailey McIntire in 25:34.9 for 200th-place. For the women Gabrielle Broschard ran a 21:30.0 to post 131st-place, Megan Slamkowski earned 160th with a time of 21:48.7 and Kyra Ball secured 180th with a time of 22:06.5. Rounding out the Boilermakers was Rachel Yuska, who was timed at 22:12.4 (185th) and Isabelle Sparreo, who posted 22:48.2 (210th).
"I am proud of the effort our men's cross country showed today," head coach Norbert Elliott said. "This was a very big race with huge implications for an NCAA invite later in the season. We earned valuable points."
