WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue's Athell Bennett, Mateo Julio and Julian Saborio all saw action today in the Gamecock Fall Invitational. The tournament spans across three days, has three flights of singles and doubles and is double elimination.
Bennett lost in the first round to Diego Quiroz of Winthrop 6-4, 6-3. He came back and claimed a win in the first round of the consolation bracket against Duke's Jason Lapidus. The comeback was hard fought as he won 6-4, 6-3. He will take on Raphael Lambling of South Carolina tomorrow in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Julio couldn't secure the win in the first round against Roberts Grinvalds of Georgia Southern loosing 6-0, 6-4. Despite a tough loss the first round of the consolation bracket was a success as he took down Robert Levine of Duke 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. Julio will match up against ETSU's David Gonzalez.
Saborio lost to Brian Cernoch of North Carolina 6-2, 6-1, as well as the next round to Jan-Simon Vrbsky of Southern Methodist University 2-6, 2-6. Unfortunately, that ends Saborio's weekend at the Gamecock Fall Invitational in singles.
Doubles was hard fought for the Boilermakers as both teams lost in the first round but will play again tomorrow. Bennett and Saborio fought hard in flight A but were defeated by MacFalane and Hussey of Georgia Southern 9-8, 10-5. They hope to find redemption tomorrow when they take on North Carolina's Peck and Harrison. In flight B Julio and Stephan Koenigsfest 7-9 to Benson and Lopez of Pres. The two will fight tomorrow against Marques and Anghel of East Carolina.
