WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue's Silvia Ambrosio and Seira Shimizu started the season with victories in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Thursday.
No. 4-seeded Ambrosio defeated UAB's Marlene Herrman 6-0, 6-0, while Shimizu topped San Diego's Nicole Anderson 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the round of 32.
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is the longest-running event of its kind for collegiate tennis players with the exception of the NCAA Championships.
Ambrosio will face Kateryna Popova of Lipscomb and Shimizu meets Syracuse's Guzal Yuspova on Friday.
The Boilermaker duo also will start the doubles draw Friday, facing Florida Atlantic's Natalia Boltinskaya and Kristen Thoms.
