WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 20 Boilermakers welcome Oakland and Notre Dame to Holloway Gymnasium for their second weekend of nonconference action. Purdue faces the Golden Grizzlies at 6 p.m. on Saturday and the Fighting Irish at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
SERIES INFORMATION
Oakland: This is the first meeting between the Boilermakers and the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland is 2-25 all-time vs. Big Ten opponents (wins: Michigan, 2-0, 1977; Rutgers, 3-1, 2013).
Notre Dame: Purdue is 15-7 all-time against the Fighting Irish since first meeting on Sept. 8, 1983. The teams last met on Sept. 3, 2016, when the Boilermakers racked up 17.5 blocks en route to a 3-1 victory (25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 25-16) in the Shamrock Invitational. All-American Danielle Cuttino pounded down 22 kills, while hitting a .425 clip and adding five blocks to garner tournament MVP honors. Then-freshman Blake Mohler chipped in six kills while pacing the Purdue blocking effort with a match-best nine. Purdue currently owns a four-match winning streak against Notre Dame with the last Irish win coming Sept. 17, 2003.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
The Golden Grizzlies, winners of three straight, are coming off a four set win at Bowling Green earlier this week. In Oakland's victory over the Falcons, Lindsey Wightman recorded 39 digs, the second-most in program history for an individual match and was just three digs short of breaking current Oakland assistant coach Lauren Duguette's record. Offensively, the Golden Grizzlies are guided by this week's Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week, Jaime Walling, who tallied 40 kills in Oakland's first three matches in which the Golden Grizzlies took the tournament title at Purdue Fort Wayne. She registered 2.86 kills per set and a .451 hitting percentage while committing just eight errors in 71 attempts and was named to the all-tournament team.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame swept Weber State, Toledo and Northern Kentucky to open the 2018 season. The Fighting Irish hit .218 and put down 2.8 aces per set. Junior Jemma Yeadon led the team with 4.36 kills on .253 hitting. Freshman Charley Niego added 3.44 kills, while rookie setter Zoe Nunez controlled the offense with 9.33 assists per set. Accruing 84 assists, 22 digs, eight blocks, six kills and three aces, Nunez was selected ACC Co-Freshman of the Week.
LAST TIME OUT
The Boilermakers went 3-0 on opening weekend, sweeping Wofford, Bowling Green and Tulsa to claim the Reamer Club Premier title. Outside hitters Sherridan Atkinson and Caitlyn Newtown paced the Boilermaker offense on opening weekend with 5.11 and 3.00 kills per set, respectively. Middle blockers Blake Mohler (2.22) and Grace Cleveland (2.11) also contributed over two kills per set while also leading the team with double-digit blocks. Mohler topped the squad with 11 blocks while Cleveland followed with 10. Defensively, libero Brooke Peters pulled up 5.67 digs per set and tied Atkinson for a team-best six aces. Setter Hayley Bush added 2.11 digs per set to go with her 11.44 assists per set tally.
POLL POSITION
Purdue moved up three spots to No. 20 in the August 27 poll, after being listed at No. 23 in the AVCA Top 25 in the preseason coaches' poll. It marks the team's 18th consecutive ranking and 200th appearance on the national poll overall. The Boilermakers topped off the list at No. 25 in the Aug. 9, 2017, poll and were ranked throughout the rest of the season, peaking at No. 13 (9/18) and ending the year at No. 18. Purdue's highest rank on the poll was eighth, which the Boilermakers reached in 1982 and 2013.
SMOKIN' ACES
The Boilermakers served up 22 aces on opening weekend, including a pair of four-ace efforts from libero Brooke Peters and sophomore Julianna Reisinger. Peters tallied four aces against Tulsa while Resinger opened with career-best four aces versus Wofford.
STRONG STARTS
The Boilermakers have won their season opening match 15 of the last 16 years, including 2018, and 36 times in the program's 41-year history. Dave Shondell's teams have been 3-0 after opening weekend 10 times since 2004. Shondell's teams have started the year 6-0 or better six times: 7-0 in 2011/2017, 14-0 in 2011, 7-0 in 2008, 9-0 in 2006 and 11-0 in 2005. The team's 18-3 start through 21 matches in 2014 marked the best under Shondell tying the 2011 and 2005 seasons.
